Why Does My Makeup Look Flaky?

Have you ever applied makeup on your face and then stepped back and realized that it looks dry and flaky? What causes that and how can you fix it? Is it more of a preventative step that needs to be taken or can you repair the damage once it’s been done without having to redo all of your makeup?

In this article, we’re looking at the question of “Why does my makeup look so flaky?” and solving it for you.

Why Does My Makeup Always Look Flaky?

There are two reasons why your makeup application is coming out flaky and dry- how you combine the products you use and the application process you use.

If you’re messing up either one of these parts of applying makeup, you could end up with flaky looking skin or flaky looking makeup.

Why does my makeup look dry and flaky? Your application process could be to blame. Let’s examine that first. You want to make sure that your skin isn’t dehydrated when you’re applying the makeup. If your skin is not hydrated enough, you don’t want to add a full coverage foundation on there.

It can be beneficial to hydrate your skin first and make sure that you have the right kind of foundation for your skin type. If your skin is dry, you want to use a foundation that’s suitable for that skin type.

You’ll probably run into the same problem of flaky looking makeup if you’re not keeping your skin hydrated. Make sure that you’re getting plenty of water every day, and give your skin plenty of nutrients and vitamins so that it can stay hydrated. You can use lotions and other skincare products that will hydrate and nourish your skin.

You don’t have to allow your skin to dry out and look cracked. It shouldn’t resemble a barren desert, but it should be soft and supple.

People who have naturally dry skin may need to use more hydration techniques, but even then your skin may have a naturally dry texture to it.

That’s okay, and you can still get your foundation and other makeup to look right. You just have to use the proper makeup for your skin. Knowing your skin type is very important when choosing and applying makeup.

Remember that the other reason you’ll be asking “Why does my makeup look flaky?” is because of the combination of products that you use. If you’re not using the right primer for your skin, you’re going to have a bad day. If you see that your foundation is cracked or your powder is making your skin flaky, you want to be careful about covering that up.

Adding more product onto something that’s already looking poorly isn’t a very good idea.

How to Keep Your Makeup from Flaking

Why does my skin look flaky with makeup? We’ve talked about what you may be doing wrong, and now let’s talk about what you can do to fix the problem or to prevent it from happening in the first place.

1. Be Sparing with Foundation

Keep in mind that the application process is where you’re likely to go wrong when it comes to why your face looks flaky when wearing makeup. Your foundation is probably the root of the problem, if it’s not your skin.

A lot of people who have little experience with applying makeup run into an issue of flaky looking skin or flaky looking makeup. They’re asking themselves- “Why does my face look flaky when I wear makeup?” The answer could come down to how much foundation they’re using.

Start with just a little foundation, using less than you think you need. You can always add more if necessary, but it’s more difficult to remove some foundation. If you have to remove it, you may have to redo all of the makeup in that area of your face, and that can be a lot of work. It can also be really tough to blend everything back in smoothly if you’re trying to fix spots in your makeup where the skin looks flaky.

Go sparingly with the foundation, and then add more as needed to get the right look.

2. Hydrate with a Mist

How do you hydrate skin that’s being stubborn and still looking dry after all your best efforts? You have tried to use vitamins and minerals to give yourself healthy skin, and you drink plenty of water, and you use the right kind of products for your skin type.

You can use a hydrating mist spray. Cover your face with that as a primer, and then put on your makeup as normal. The hydrating spray creates a foundation that you can work from, and it will help your makeup stay on the smoother and longer.

It keeps your makeup from cracking throughout the day, giving you a flawless look. It may take a little getting used to using the hydrating spray and making sure that you’re not overdoing it, but you’ll get it down eventually.

3. Use Concealer for Spot Checking

If you’re someone who’s prone to adding more makeup to your skin when it starts to look poorly, you may run into the problem of cakey, flaky makeup. You want to use the right tool for the job, and you can cover up spots and blemishes using concealer. It’s made for just that purpose, so it can be used sparingly where needed to create the desired effect.

Concealer is really good for giving your skin a natural look that hides the appearance of makeup.

You may want to start out with a cream-based concealer, as it offers the best protection for blemishes. Try to choose a concealer that works with your skin tone well, so it looks more natural.

Concealer should be used gingerly, using only a little bit at a time and applied gently. The concealer can be set with a loose setting powder. Use only a little concealer and a little powder, and then finish off with the setting spray. This will keep your makeup in place for a long time.
