Toners don’t change the color of your hair so much as they simply adjust it. You want to be careful about toning your hair too much, as you can drastically alter the color or damage your hair.

You should know that every hair treatment you use that is meant to artificially adjust the color or change the texture can cause at least temporary damage to your hair.

Your hair needs time to recover between these treatments, and that’s true of toner as well as other treatments.

How to Use Toner for Blonde Hair

If you feel that your blonde hair is looking a little flat or not quite the right color you would want from it, you can use toner to change that. Hair toner can brighten your hair, enhancing the way it looks and even altering the color slightly. Hair toner on blonde hair can get rid of some of the brassy looking tones and correct hair color.

Hair toner has a bit of pigment in it, so it is working to adjust the color in one direction or another. It may be making your hair brighter or darker or just helping to bring out more vibrant colors.

Toner can be used on hair that has already been dyed or colored. So, if you bleach your hair or color it blonde, but that’s not its natural color, you can use toner to adjust the color of the dye to make it more to your liking.

If you have blonde hair, you can use a toner to take a vibrantly colored head of hair and tone it down, giving it more of an ashy or dusty look.

Toner can also be used with hair bleaching to adjust the color and rescue it from a drastic bleaching job that you’re starting to regret.

Whether you’re looking to fix a mistake you made when coloring your hair or just try a new look out to see how changing the color looks for you, toner is a good option. There are many different shades a blonde hair, and using toner can help you explore a wider range of them.

How to Put in Toner

You could use toning shampoo or a color refreshing gloss to tone your hair and get the color you want. Depending on which product you’re using, you’ll want to follow a different procedure.

For a toning shampoo, you can use it in the shower as you wash your hair. Once your hair is wet, you can gently massage the shampoo throughout your hair. Work up a healthy lather and then rinse your hair out completely.

If you have brassiness in your hair that has proven to be very resilient, you may want to leave the shampoo in your hair for a few minutes after you’ve lathered it up. Give the shampoo about two to three minutes to sit in your hair before you rinse it out.

If you’re planning to use a color refreshing gloss, the procedure is a little different. You can shampoo and condition your hair the way you normally would and then take the gloss and squeeze some out into your hand, making a glob that’s about the size of a quarter.

Spread that through your hair, starting from the roots and working outward. Then, put another glob in your hand of the same size and repeat the process, going through that entire process about four times. Let the gloss stay in your hair for about 3 minutes, and then rinse it out thoroughly.

You should start to see results very quickly. Most hair toner works from anywhere to 5 to 20 minutes after you put it in, so you won’t have to wait long for results. You’ll soon know if you did it properly or if you need to do something different.

How Often to Tone Blonde Hair

As you explore a range of shades for your hair, you may find that your first experience with toner doesn’t quite give you the look you’re going for. It’s good to only use a little toner at once to see how that looks before you start doing something drastic with it.

After all, that major change in hair color can stand out, and that may not be what you’re looking for. As you make minor adjustments, you may be wondering how often should you tone blonde hair.

Like I said earlier, you want to give your hair a chance to rest between each toning session. Your hair stylist will probably be able to tell you how long that should be for your hair, because your stylist will know about the products you’re putting in and will be able to examine your hair in person. If you do it yourself, how often should you tone your blonde hair?

Toner can be used every 6 to 8 weeks. This helps to keep the look you want and keep the color treatment from fading out. It also gives your hair a chance to recuperate, though it should only take healthy hair about two weeks to recover from her treatments like dying or toning.

How Often to Tone Blonde Hair to Keep Away Brassiness?

If you don’t want a brassy tone in your hair, you can use hair toner to keep that look away. Refreshing your hair color about every 6 to 8 weeks is a good amount of time to keep the brassiness out of your hair.

If you have blonde hair that’s been bleached or that has a bleached look to it, brassy tones can develop after a while. If you treat your hair with a coloring agent, that can begin to oxidize in time, as the air in the atmosphere can affect the color and cause it to fade.

By rejuvenating your hair color with some toner, you keep the brassy look at bay and retain the color you want. This makes your hair look healthy and vibrant, so keep in mind that you’ll need to update your hair somewhere between six and eight weeks with more toner.
